The solemn dedication of the original St. Timothy’s Parish was held on April 26, 1953 as a mission. Through the efforts of the Oblate Fathers – Jose Arratibel and James Cassidy and with the help of the Extension Society, the people in this community could worship God in a Church of their own.
The Church was dedicated to St. Timothy in memory of Timothy O’Rourke whose family sponsored this project.
Ret. Rev. Msgr. Joseph L. Manning officiated at the dedication. The Rev. Father James Cassidy with Rev. John Schwider and Robert Vreteau as Deacon and Sub-Deacons celebrated the Mass. The Choir from the De Mazenod Seminary, under the direction of Rev. J. Hakey, sang the Solemn High Mass.
The Church serviced the parish for the following 20 years. In 1966, Father Augustine Perez, OMI arrived and found old and inadequate buildings. Slowly but surely, he paid all outstanding bills and began a fund for the new buildings needed. When Fr. Francis Schoutteten, OMI became the new pastor at the end of August 1969, he saw the same need for a whole new parish plant and so came the idea to build everything at the same time and to do it as inexpensive as possible, but still have a beautiful Church. It was then decided to build everything under the same roof. The Archbishop gave his complete approval and the Van Delden Company was contracted for the building. It has 6 classrooms that surround the Church, a chapel, 3 offices and living quarters for priests. The new building complex was dedicated in November of 1971.
The Church is located at 1515 Saltillo St. between 18th and 19th streets and is one of the most beautiful Churches in San Antonio.
