In addition to Mass in English and Spanish we are also the home of the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s only Tridentine Mass.
Our parishioners come from all over the San Antonio Greater Area.
We welcome all visitors
Whether you are visiting San Antonio and normally attend a Tridentine Mass or you are curious about it and have never seen a Tridentine Mass, we are happy to have you.
The Tridentine Mass is Sundays at 12:30 PM
1st Friday of the month - 7 PM
1st Saturday of the month - 12:10 PM
Attire and Veils
For those visiting for the first time you may notice that most woman will be wearing a veil and likely a dress or skirt. Men do not cover their heads and usually wear slacks and a button-down shirt. However, since San Antonio is a popular vacation spot, we understand that Catholic must attend Mass even while traveling and therefore sometimes do not remember to pack cothing for Mass. It is more important to attend Mass regardless of your attire. We want you here. There is no set dress code in the Church for any Masses. While we should always give God our best, everyone’s best is vastly different. The above suggestions are just what is the norm in the Tridentine Mass. We ask you to simply wear what is appropriate and modest.
If you want to learn more about veiling, you can find information at www.veilsbylily.com/frequently-asked-questions/
If you’d like to borrow a veil, we have them in the foyer as you enter the church.
They are washed after each Mass.
Mass Aids
In addition to veils, we also have Mass helps in the foyer. The small paper red books are a short version of the Mass in both Latin and English with some images to help you follow along. Don’t worry, everyone is confused and a bit lost the first few times they attend. The margins have some explanations of what is happening.
If you’re already familiar with the Mass but would like a more detailed book, we also have Saint Edmund Campion Missal & Hymnal for your use.
Receiving Communion
Holy Communion is given only on the tongue (the only method allowed in the Tridentine Mass) and the communicant should be on their knees if at all possible. In the Tridentine Mass only the priest receives the Precious Blood of Christ. If you’d like a blessing but are not properly disposed to receive Communion you may still come forward with your arms crossed over your chest like what is done in the Mass of the V2. When receiving the Body of Christ please do not lean forward. Simply open your mouth and hold out your tongue. Father does his very best to be sure he does not touch anyone so as to not spread germs. And leaning forward might cause him to accidently touch you.
We reserve the first row of the pews (except for the outermost sections) for receiving Communion.
As in any Catholic Mass non-Catholics should not receive Communion. This is not to keep you separate from us, it is simply that we believe it is truly the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ whereas our non-Catholic friends do not. If you are interested in becoming Catholic, please contact the church office for help, but you will not be ready to receive Holy Communion until after you have become a Catholic.
Children
Please remember babies and small children are also part of the parish family. We understand they can sometimes be disruptive but it’s a joyful noise and sign of great hope for the Church as a whole. Seeing many children means we’re growing. We do not have a cry room. If you have children and are worried about their noise, you may sit in the chapel area behind the tabernacle. You can reach this area by using the 'exit' door at the back of the right side of the church. Once you go through that door make an immediate left. But please do not feel you must sit there. We have many large families with many small children. Others please be patient. Children simply make noise. Our Mass time is also at the time many children nap. They cannot learn what they do not witness. We are very blessed with so many children.
A little about the Tridentine Mass
The Tridentine Mass is the Mass that was used by the Church around the world until the Vatican II Council came into effect in 1969. We now have the choice to attend either the Mass in Latin or Mass in the vernacular.
There are other differences than just the language used, such as the direction the priest stands, what we say and do, how we receive the Body of Christ, etc.
The priest faces Jesus on the cross and instead of the Laity.
We do not participate in the same way or as often as in the Mass of the V2. The Mass of the V2 is often referred to as a “dialogue Mass” whereas the Tridentine Mass is much quieter. We still respond but not as often. And most of the responses are done for us by the altar servers.
Below is a short video of the Mass with translations to help you understand what is going on.
You can find the readings for Sunday Masses at https://extraordinaryform.org/properssundays.html
As a community the Tridentine Mass group meets on the 3rd Sunday month for lunch after Mass. Each month’s menu is posted on this page. There are a few times per year we need to move the date.
Please check here for the menu and date each month.
Visitors are welcome to attend the luncheon. While it is potluck style, please feel free to join us even if you have nothing to share. We always have plenty.
